Fresh Pet Food Safety: Cooking, Storage and Handling

Fresh pet food safety depends on the whole control system: ingredient condition, hygienic preparation, appropriate cooking or validated processing, packaging integrity, storage and safe handling after opening.

No single phrase such as “fresh,” “cooked” or “natural” is enough to demonstrate safety on its own.

Safety system

Four separate controls matter

01

Preparation hygiene

Hands, utensils, bowls and preparation surfaces can all become contamination routes if not cleaned appropriately.

02

Processing

Cooking or another validated processing step should be matched to the food and hazard being controlled.

03

Packaging & storage

Damaged packaging, poor temperature control or incorrect storage can compromise a product after processing.

Raw vs cooked

Why raw pet food carries additional microbiological risk

The FDA states that raw pet food is more likely than processed pet food to contain disease-causing bacteria such as Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

Thorough cooking can reduce those bacterial risks, but safe handling still matters because contamination can occur through hands, utensils, bowls, surfaces or storage.

Storage

Opening the pack changes the risk context

FDA handling guidance recommends promptly refrigerating or discarding unused canned or pouched pet food and keeping refrigerated pet food covered. It also recommends washing feeding bowls and utensils after use.

For any CaniBowl product, storage and handling instructions should match the actual validated product format rather than being copied from another food category.

CaniBowl application

Safety claims should follow validation

CaniBowl should document ingredient controls, processing parameters, packaging, QC, storage conditions and shelf-life validation before making strong safety or shelf-stability claims. Where retort or another thermal process is used, the relevant process validation and regulatory requirements should govern the claim.
